School ends in May, so I’ll get back to my movie watching after Midnight in a months time!

That is when Game of Thrones isn’t occupying my life.

Which brings me to my next topic!!!

I have another writer joining me, WanderinGrinder.

Who knows whatever the fuck that means, but my guess is that it has something to do with either baseball, maryjanejuana, or the fact that when he was young he was found in deep forrest and as the legend goes he only eats nuts and has developed the ability grind them between his index finger and thumb.

I just don’t think Argo was Best Picture, but it looks like that’s just me.

I’m happy either way this works out, but Joaquin really did something that he’s not getting any recognition for so I’ll give it to him. DDL killed it though, pun intended.

She’s my woman. Jessica Chastain could win, but J-Law will be sexy no matter what.

I think his weight will pull him with the W on this one, but it could be anyone’s game, De Niro included. Just Django and Master were two of my favorites of the year.

Helen would be an awesome upset here, her performance was amazing, but seems Anne is stone cold lock.

This could go to these guys, with Speilberg as the dark horse (I know right!) but in the end it’s anyone’s game, each has a different aspect highlighted in their work, so this will be interesting.

If I didn’t have to work today (and the last week straight), I’d be making Gifs and Writing Shizz all day up until the moment. Alas, I’m a slave and someone thought it was a good idea to have their anniversary on Oscar night. WTF right!

So I’m going to spit out some predictions, One from the heart and then the one that will win.

Starting with all the little awards.

Visual Effects

The only other option could be Hobbit, which would only be semi surprising, but the technicality of Pi should win it quite a few awards tonight. When you think Visual Achievement I think no further than Pi.

Sound Mixing & Editing (Two Categories)

My Heart Says - Skyfall for both

My Money Says - Skyfall for Editing Les Mis for Mixing

But really, these are COMPLETE guesses.

I can’t speak to short films because I haven’t seen them

but one has guacamole, so

The Academy always throws the real *Upsets into this category so that’s why Les Mis will probably/randomly walk away with this one. Plus Jackman did have some sick burns throughout the movie.

I really want to see No, and had I maybe I would’ve chosen that, but Amour has it sewn up… so I’ve heard.

Suspense is made through editing… At least that’s what my professors say, and Argo had an insane amount of suspense so I’ll give it’s due here.

If you haven’t seen it, the set is absolutely amazing. It’s a stage yet much, much more.

I’ve only seen these two out of all these films so, naturally my only choices. I’ve heard good things about How to Survive, and Kings Point though.

Argo and Les Mis, could also come away with this one, but once again Mirror Mirror? Shouldn’t you have to be a good movie to be nominated?

Brave could take it, but to be honest both Brave and Wreck it underwhelmed me, making Frakenweenie by far the best of the five.

#9 - The Hobbit - Countdown to Oscars

When the first reviews came out for Hobbit, I was definitely upset. I didn’t want to hear that it was average. I was literally expecting to be taken back to middle earth… In 48 fps!

So when I saw it I was nervous. Thought it would be too jumpy so I didn’t see it in IMAX, (huge mistake) but still stuck with the 3D. Needless to say it was all the that I wanted. I mean, how could you do something wrong when after these three movies the screenplays will be longer than the actual book they’re adapted from.

It made it into my top ten for a number of reasons, with probably the greatest reason for the movie’s success Mr. Sir Knight God Ian Mckellan. Gandalf the Grey is just too much awesome to contain. I can’t wait to get the DVD or Rip and make gif after gif of some Gandalf action. Without spoiling anything, the action to be found in The Hobbit was albeit slow in the beginning but those are the caveats of extending a book the way Jackson is doing. Martin Freeman did a good job as Bilbo too, he’s a surprisingly good actor, I’ll always love Hitchiker’s Guide.

I loved the movie and I’m looking forward to Jackson doing the next two especially…. dragons.

What Ben Affleck could be saying when Argo whens Best Picture?

Argo snuck into my top 10 because I preferred it over Zero Dark Thirty, and quite a few other movies. It was a great movie don’t get me wrong. I do love the love Ben is getting, and I do like thinking about the sweet love he gives Jennifer Garner. After they got married Ben Affleck went up in my book!

Back to the movie. As Roger Ebert put it, Argo is a movie’s movie. It has a good tight narrative, it’s based on a true story, it’s got a great cast, and the suspense is killing me! It was a great movie’s movie. My only slight problem that pushed it down my list was that it built and built and built like a roller coaster climbing and clicking hundreds of feet up, and after snakes and twists and one loop de loop it just ends. No drop or action scene, very sensationalized with the climax being an airport scene and guy making sound effects with his mouth.

My problem is with the fact that though Argo was extremely suspenseful and kept my attention I felt it was trying to be more than it was. I just felt looking back that the suspense didn’t pay off the way I wanted it too. I don’t know if I’m crazy but, hey, at least it made my top ten!

Because it’s ~~wedding~~ movie season!

With the Oscars in February, Golden Globe noms out, critics choice… pick an award show and there’s hype! So because you just don’t know who to trust out there, I can tell you. Trust me. Nobody reads me and nobody pays me so you can trust you’re going to get an unbiased newscast. Think of me as Jeff Daniels from the Newsroom , but slightly less awesome.

I’m going to (unsuccessfully try) to do a post a every day or two reviewing a movie on the oscar hype as well as a random one. Got plans for rescuers down under movie after midnight. OK! Might even hear from other editors.

Movie after Midnight #9 - Romancing the Stone (1984)

I love my parents.

There are many reasons I love them, most of them having to do with keeping me alive and not being parents like this guy, but there is one reason in particular that I particularly love about them.

They bought every movie channel. Showtime/HBO/IFC/AMC/STARZ… (so on so forth) everything! The thing about these channels is you can just sit there and keep watching movie after movie after movie… after movie.

Those movies happened to be (in order) The Lorax (On Demand), Our Idiot Brother (Showtime), Kaboom (Showtime) , Romancing the Stone (Starz), and right now Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (AMC). I didn’t want to write a full movie review for each of these so instead I’ll just pick the one I started at the midnight hour, Romancing the Stone.

I’m not sure I knew what to expect going into this film, I was thinking more Princess Bride, but alas I was mistaken. In a good way! Romance is an adult adventure movie with plenty of action love and Kathleen Turner, Michael Douglas, and Michael Douglas’ Hair.

This movie had so many good parts. Whether they’re in a cargo plane burning marijuana for warmth, wrestling alligators, knife fights, you name it and this movie might’ve had it (i.e. Michael Douglas’ hair) Not to mention Kathleen Turner looking smokin in 1984. There were so many parts of this movie that made it worth watching, and it just got progressively crazier.

This ending scene is one of the best endings I’ve even seen in a movie. It escalated quickly and finished strong, leaving me overall feeling satisfied by the film. I just want to take a moment to talk about Michael Douglas and how handsome and handsomely badass he was in this movie. He re-inspired the Michael inside me.

This film was directed by Robert Zemeckis and then you can see how it was so good. The funny thing though is this is was the first big movie he directed. He went on to do all the Back to the Futures, and many Tom Hanks films. WILSON! All him! Overall I thought the movie was good! I’ve been meaning to watch this movie for a long time but I’ve never had the time. It was funny and a tiny bit lewd which really made me like it all the more. In the end it turned out to be a great pre-make of Princess Bride. Which is completely fine with me.

Of course they probably won’t post on here for a little while because they’re as lazy as I am. If you, random reader (let’s face it probably nobody) would also like to write for movies after midnight send me a message and we’ll get the ball rolling.

The format is you…. write. In any style. About movies… after midnight. If you don’t like staying up late (bitch*cough) you can watch any movie as long as it surpasses midnight.

Two Up-Til Midnight Movies

Saw two new films this week, but both ended just before midnight and therefore don’t technically qualify for dis blog, butttttt here’s a lil somsin’ somsin’ anyway

Moonrise Kingdom

This movie was just as good as I hoped it would be. I could go on telling you about how awesome the wallpaper was, how awesome the pan and tracking shots were or how amazing the characters were OR I could just say Wes Anderson. It was the kids that really brought this movie to the next level and even the scenes we saw in trailers were 100 times more mesmerizing in the context of the film.

Savages

Savages was a good film. It’s Oliver Stone so good is expected. I really like Aaron Johnson he was great in Kick-Ass and Nowhere Boy and here he did quite well also. The movie lacked…something, what I don’t know but definitely something and came across to me as it did in the previews. It reminded me of Smokin Aces but with a little bit more storyline. Benicio of course is the fucking man and a great actor and Blake Lively is a hottay, but otherwise I’d wait for video for this one.

I do like the Savages wordplay in it though. I can’t tell if this movie was making fun of a genre or if it was trying to have fun, or if it was serious, but nonetheless it was a decent movie made by a decent director with decent actors.

Movie After Midnight: Premiere #1 - The Amazing Spider-man

When I first saw Spider-man gaining attention once again I was pretty excited too see Mary Jane and Peter get it on and have babies and ish like that.

Then when I saw that it twas in fact a new Spider-man

Naturally I thought to myself. Fuck this, another Spider-man. Where does corporate greed end! They’re just trying to squeeze out every last cent Spidey had! Can’t they think of anything new? Tobey Macguire! I hate everything! Coporate Greed! No Mary Jane! WTF The Natural Red-Head is a Blonde! They added The Amazing to make a difference! shit.

Then after I calmed down and shrank back to my normal size putting down the cars and hot dog carts, I noticed, hey, it’s got that guy and Rhys Ifans? And Wait a sec, the new lead roles are Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone both of whom are SuperF-ingCool. Andrew in Social Network and Never Let Me go was so good, but you can see how he can be comedic at the same time. And then Emma Stone, who amazingly pulled off Blonde insanely well as well as being more talented than almost all of the human race combined. Oh and They’re This Now.

And then Marc Webb who’s only previous movie just happens to be a 10 out of 10 Guinesses on my Guiness scale. He also has a very appropriate last name. So needless to say i felt in safe with the Webb that they formed for this movie.

Then came the time to actually see the movie. I was waiting for the film to come down and wrap me up in a carefully formed web cacoon and slowly drain the blood from my soon to be lifeless body, and this movie did all of that.

IN A GOOD WAY! This movie really caught me off-guard. Owen Glieberman of Entertainment Weekly gave it an A- and I tend to agree with that man, every now and again. But agree with a reboot series A-? ahhmmm…. I wouldn’t have thought I would.

But I’d defintely agree. This film was a relief and had everything you could possibly want from a movie. It was funny, action packed, quickly paced, great characters, actors, and crew. I was a fan from start to finish. Here’s just a few things to look forward too if you’re going to watch it. (without giving too much away)

Emma Stone
Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield Chemistry: A+
Much better storyline and Spider-man (did some stuff Spider-man really would not just fly around screaming ala Tobey)

As Owen G. put it, this is a big budget big everything movie that still kept an Indie feel and I really think that was retained through director Marc Webb and the excellent chemistry between Emma and Andrew.

This movie is definitely worth seeing, I won’t give anything away but I didn’t see this in 3D, so that might just have to happen for me.

MovieMidnight After-thought -Dazed and Confused is American Graffiti

Watching American Graffiti again for the first time in while and can’t help but notice that this is pretty much Dazed and Confused.

Both these films have a lot of not only similar thoughts at the end but almost the same characters, but just in different decades. I’ll do a real post about this when I research it more. but here’s what other people are saying. Frankly I think one of those people probably knows what they’re talking about.

Movie after Midnight #8 - 3 Ninjas (1992)

It’s 2:52 PST and 3 Ninjas is on. (Note also on Youtube in it’s entirety so I don’t blame you for stopping your reading now and just getting some 3 ninjas)

I have trained my little sister well because this little gem was just sitting in my DVR waiting to be watched! Granted it’s on Disney XD (yeah, IDK when that XD thing happened either) but still watchable especially because fast forwarding. Except for this commercial which I’m buying. now.

I remember this movie from when I was a kid and is one of the few 10/10’s on my imdb but that’s mostly for nostalgia sake. There were a few key differences I noticed as a 22 year old man that I didn’t quite notice or think anything about when i was a boy.

For one, there is a lot of violence in this movie but aside from the blunt nut trauma (Light up the eyes boys) nothing really fatal, except for one shot to the heart with a knife by of course, grandpa where the sound effect (and they use a lot of them) is actually that of a boinging ball. Those are really the only words I could use to describe it. It is cut out of all the scenes on Youtube and must be a Disney XD version.

Other random differences

Those ninjas might be Storm Troopers on earth because they were constantly made to be fools by kids, even Tum Tum.
The mom was way hotter
The stoner meth head metal heads were pretty duckin fumb in this movie.
Emily is kind of a bitch.
Rocky is a lot cockier than I remember, I always thought Colt was the loose cannon but Rocky is pretty B.A
Rocky can DUNK! Forget being a ninja, NBA!

Thing’s that haven’t changed

Rocky loves Emily.
Synder is still a dick, and Grandpa is still The Man.
Colt’s still the loose cannon.
Tum Tum still has a lisp when he says Jelly Beans.
They Light Up The Eyes (see link above)

I love this movie. Worth seeing if you ever wanted to be a ninja. 10 out of 10 reggatown bongo beats! Worth seeing just to see Rocky show off, he’s so impressive!

Movie after Midnight #7 - Saint Ralph (2004)

Didn’t know anyone in this movie. (except Jennifer Tilly. so no one.)

Didn’t know anything about this movie.

Couldn’t stop watching, and I was late for work.

So I gave myself away right there.

I was watching it during the day, but I diiddd finish it after Midnight, all 12 minutes.

So I’ll just talk about the last 12 minutes. Ralph Walker races in the Boston Marathon against the wishes of his headmaster and those around him in order to prove that miracles can happen. He does this because his mother is in a coma in the hospital and the last thing he said to her was about him (SPOILER) getting semen in the community pool. (pool scene. not that one)

This movie despite that slightly off beat plotline is one of the most sincere and honest movies I’ve seen in a long time. Completely worth a watch.

He’s a sinner and saint, he’s everything you ain’t. Ralph.

This one counts as more of a Movie into Midnight. My blame rest squarely on the shoulders of those around me, without whom I would be watching movies later rather than sleeping through them.

Wet Hot American Summer

David Wain <—- This Guy directed it!

Not hard to believe such a great writer could be such a great director (Role Models is funny). This film has the horny lives of teenagers down to a tee in a retro and campy throwback blast from the past but still resonant in the pres…o-nant (now I’m rambling) but what I’m trying to say is you’d think this movie was made in the 80’s or 90’s because it just has that classic cult feel to it and because their short shorts. In 2001 THIS is what I was like if I had to wear shorts even below my knees!

I had never seen this film before and it is one of those movies that had resided in my secret shame category. When I was a kid I wasn’t allowed to see that stuff. So I resented it and completely forgot about it… until On Demand gave me a second chance.

I loved it. Funny, fucking movie.

The Cast (completely rediculous)

This guy is in it too! You can always trust a Joe Lo Trulio film?

This movie was great for a few reasons, aside from the blunt over the top sexual references, making out, innuendo, and plain sexual mumbo jumbo. I know what you’re thinking what’s better than that, I mean this movie had drugs too. (I’m putting a scene like that in my movie for sure)

The film takes place at a summer camp where the counselors are horny and it runs on general disfunction altogether, much like any summer camp. The multitude of characters pushing this “story” was fantastic and I enjoyed every quirk that all of them seemed to portray.

This is a raunchy awesome summer movie and is one of those ones that gets you going in summertime, it made me want to go to a lake and help kids (not) drown. I highley suggest this movie and whenever I figure out a rating system this will get 4 out of 5 wallabys or 8 out of 10 Cheetos Bags or 83 of 100 jelly beans. Well whatever it turns out to be it’ll be good.
